I recently watched a deeply ironic and upsetting video that featured an Islamic scholar, or someone commonly referred to as a "Gus," mocking an elderly ice tea seller. This incident left me feeling disheartened and disturbed, as it highlighted an issue I have noticed increasingly: the casual and unmerited use of the title "Gus."
The term, rooted in respect and reverence, seems to have lost its weight, with people being called "Gus" regardless of whether their behavior aligns with the principles such a title entails.
According to the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), "Gus" is a term of respect used for Islamic scholars, kyais, or other esteemed individuals. In some regions, it is also an affectionate nickname for boys, derived from the word "bagus," meaning "good" often intended as a heartfelt blessing.
However, it pains me to see how some of those who bear this title fail to live up to its meaning. Instead of embodying the values of humility, compassion, and wisdom, which are integral to Islamic teachings, they act in ways that contradict these virtues.
The video of the ice tea seller is a glaring example. The vendor, an elderly man working hard to provide for his family, became the target of mockery. 😭 (I was crying writing this part, hoping he's always blessed by Allah. 🤍)
What made this worse was the laughter from the audience on stage, as though such behavior was perfectly acceptable. (What an evil creature! 😠)
This kind of insensitivity is not only shocking but also antithetical to the principles of Islam. How can someone who is supposed to represent knowledge and morality ridicule someone else’s honest labor? It reflects a troubling trend among some so-called scholars or "Gus" figures who fail to uphold the very standards they are meant to exemplify.
A true Islamic scholar is expected to be a beacon of guidance, embodying faith, patience, kindness, and humility. Their role is to teach others through both words and actions, inspiring their communities to strive for righteousness.
Yet, instead of fostering goodwill and respect, individuals like the one in the video tarnish the image of Islam with their arrogance and insensitivity. Such behavior is not only disappointing but also detrimental to the faith, as it creates a negative impression of Islamic teachings among observers.
This situation reminded me of a profound truth: knowledge without good character is meaningless. No matter how learned we are, if our attitude is devoid of humility and compassion, our knowledge holds no value.
This principle is beautifully underscored in Surah Luqman, verse 18 of the Qur'an, where Allah advises,
"Do not turn your nose up to people, nor walk pridefully upon the earth. Surely Allah does not like whoever is arrogant, boastful."
These words serve as a powerful reminder of the dangers of pride and arrogance.
To my readers, let us always strive to keep our humility intact. Pride, no matter how small, can erode our humanity. In the end, we are nothing but clay, given life and purpose by Allah SWT. Let us remember this truth and work to honor it in our actions by treating others with the respect and kindness they deserve. 🤍
